Laser Hair Removal Shaving Tips
Shaving Before Laser Hair Removal
There’s nothing wrong with shaving at any time before a laser hair removal treatment, but there are some things to consider doing to get the best possible results from the laser treatment. Keep these tips in mind when shaving before hair removal.
Pluck instead of waxing the area you’re treating. If you can’t pluck then use a depilatory cream instead. Hair removal treatments pull hair out at the root, so the root needs to be there in order for laser treatments to be effective. The lasers for the removal target melanin found in hair follicles, which is why the root must be present.
Shave a few hours before an appointment, if not the night before. That way you can get rid of the hair above the surface of your skin but allow time for your skin to heal from the irritations of shaving. Reduce the risk of razor bump by using electric razors.
Exfoliate your skin to get rid of dead skin before shaving. This gives you a cleaner and better shave with less chance of irritation.
Don’t use moisturizer. While it’s a good idea to use moisturizer after shaving, you shouldn’t use it before having a laser hair removal treatment. That’s because it leaves residue on your skin that affects the laser removal results.
Tips for Shaving After Laser Hair Removal
You may feel a slight burning sensation following a laser hair removal treatment. The sensitivity goes away within a few hours, but shaving the treated area right away will cause more irritation. Here are some tips to ensure you have a safe and effective treatment.
Wait until the area is no longer sensitive before shaving. It shouldn’t take more than a few days.
Avoid exfoliating skin for five days after treatment. Your skin is still healing, even if it doesn’t feel sensitive anymore.
Give hair time to shed. The hair sheds from damaged follicles after treatment. It may look like the hair is growing because it looks longer. Exfoliate the treated area before shaving to allow the destroyed hairs to fall out. Take note of how long you can go between shaving. The more treatments you have, the longer you can go without shaving.
